jebus.

I mean, who the hell does that guy think he is? he's so full of it... zoe and I have known you for a while, and I haven't seen ANYTHING that would make me believe you would ever do something like that to any of the users on the site, especially the ones paying for ftp service...

..and to go after others just because of an ad??? that is so ridiculous...

an immature prick like him will get caught eventually, most likely from his own stupidity and from picking a fight w/ the wrong people

...and especially if he doesn't have proof, wouldn't this be defamation of character? ( http://en.wikipedia....on_of_character ) especially since the ftp service is a business for you, so basically if you can find out who the hell this is he's in some serious trouble...

i know alot of people on here dont think much of me because ive have said alot of things on the old forums to make people mad smile.gif

BUT someone needs to play the devils advocate smile.gif

http://www.csoonline.../extortion.html

I thought this article was pretty interesting, but yeah that suspected perpetrator looks like he may be from the UK or Austrailia. If you can get his info, I'd turn it over to law enforcement.
We're all behind you though, keep your spirits up :comfort:

your chat room uses java right? that DoS attacker is probly useing a proxy to hide his ip address......BUT HES STUPID! you got him! and he doesnt even know it.

JAVA SHOWS HIS REAL IP ADDRESS! look at the java aplet of his login and graphics. or build one to show his true ip address.

the DoS attacker is stupid. Its more work to set up a DoS attack then to just show a copy of the bank statement. hes hideing something. I bet he's working for another site. no anime company would be that stupid. Hes another site owner i bet!

What a mess. I know you wouldn't intentionally take something from someone's PayPal account without authorization, but I also know systems like that are imperfect and there could be a billing issue somewhere. If he had a billing issue he should take it up with you first to fix it, or at worst go via PayPal to dispute the charges.

My concern with getting law enforcement involved is that downloading anime is at best a legal grey area and I'd rather have to weather some attcks for a few weeks than risk losing the site completely. I also would worry about the safety of the site's users, admin and owner in that case as well.

....wow what an ass.

the guy prolly got phished(or spent his on money on something *coughproncough*) somewhere and needs someone to blame.

more likely than not:
there is no statement anywhere. if police are involved, they should be looking into this attempt at extortion.
the whole bit bout his scanner is prolly a loada bull too. if hes enough of a tech-savy to DDoS a site, i find it hard to believe he doesnt have a scanner.

but seriously, what would he have to gain from attacking DA(other than helping his ego)? the add is a pretty lame excuse, he could prolly care less...
i'll stick with my thought from the otherday: someones hoping dow will abandon the domain name and pick it up for themselves.

Defamation and refusal to present evidence... no ransom.. it's likely the dude has his own subscription ftp and wants da ftp out of the race

and Zoe has a point with the law enforcement involving... an investigation on the perp will also draw attention to the actual site's nature.

Well yes somewhere within the logs i am sure they have A IP address pretaining to him, however the likelihood that it is not a proxy are rasther low. but that aside it is always worth a shot.but as for the DDoS, it is more then liekyl he is using a Botnet, what you guys could do,if you have the right kind of auditing is look over your back logs, find out how the atttack if takign place, if it is a smurf, syn flood, dns, whatever kidn of attack. Depending on what they are attacking(service wise) is how you can determine how to block is, liek if they are attacking with a botnet sending alot of http requests, you should be able to pull up the logs showing what requests they were going for. if it is a valid request, then you have to find another way, but if it is a malformed requst of anykind, simply add it to some form of filter. I beleive php has a "hack attempt" filter in the global_config file under the include folder. But i could be wrong i am not too savvy on php. but more or less, you are right, he does sound like a over-confident script kiddie. He may be able to execute such attacks, however i strongly feel he has no idea exactly how they work. which is said. Just another disgruntaled child with no other way to express themselves then through destructive activies. It is individuals such as this that give the entire hacker community as a whole a bad name and mid-repersentation within the media.

O.o
Gah...I'm sorry Dow *hug*
All I can think of when I read that is...what an ass.

I don't believe he has any bank statements in his possession or that the police are looking into his accusation at all.
For two reasons.

1. He refused to show anyone the bank statements as proof and continued maliciously attacking DA and Shinsen's site.

2. The Police might give him copies of his bank statements...but they would seriously get pissed at anyone ruining their investigation by attacking a site.

The cops don't work that way....and they never advocate vigilantyism by victims. And you know...the police would have contacted Dow and asked to see his financial records by now. What would they have to gain by not talking to him?

I think the hacker is some pissed off little kid...he is obviously rude and immature...that for whatever reason is mad at Dow.

Has he ever contacted you (Dow) personally and reasonably tried to explain his problem with PayPal? Or did he just immediately attack the site?

I just have trouble believing his accusations have any validity at all...because he is being such an immature jerk about them.

I'd hate to see Shinsen-Subs go extinct over such a silly thing as an ad. What a pitty.
Extinct? You must be joking.
Close to it. No web site, no forums, ...
Likely attacks to the bots
You think we need those to fansub?
They help get donations.
You might want to check out latest releases on our website. Or click the ads.
Why not doing it now?
The web site is nonfunctional.
Maybe your PC is non-functional. I can browse it just fine.

Right after this Belexes disconnected from IRC. The attack still continues but this guy really doesn't know what he is doing so it is rather easy to block him out.

Downloadanime.org is still officially Shinsen-Subs approved ^^
Keep up the good work dow.

You know, one thing that also bothers me....

QUOTE

[19:04:23] We've discovered over 10 different people this has happened to from dowxp's site. There are more likely.

IF (and that's a really big if) there were ANY foundation to these accusations... People are normally pretty vocal when they've had problems with their bank account, don't you find it odd that not ONE
of the supposed "10 people" have said one single word about it in the forums here?

sounds to me like someone is trying to get your files for free. they pay now and then later get their money back by complaining about this or that - in this case that dow cracked their paypal accounts (which i sincerly doubt).

he could still could make a copy of his bankstatement and transactions if it were really true. and even if it is, how does he know it was dow?!?

we could just block his attempts. do we have any idea which port he's using for the ddos attacks?! we might be able to block it if anything. (well... or is it like public p80? >_<) we could maybe encrypt the site data information with a certain code b4 its accepted into our server maybe? "#23221:" maybe something like that? or a secure connection so those ddos programs wont work. unsure.gif or what about keeping a log of all the ips that access da and ur other site. then during the attacks, check out which ip pops up the most and that should be the hacker.

also they guy said "bloke".... australian member maybe?

lol only if the attackers has an remote port trojan thats my area. but with all trojans on the web there completely random attacks. i cant pick "billy bob at 123 maple st." and say i got you now. I can only search the world wide web for people who have open ports. So that would almost be impossable unless you give me his ip address and i can scan his ports from a remote location.

It perplexes me how infinitely stupid some people are.
There is no way in hell that anyone who actually had money stolen from them and brought the cops into the matter would DDoS a site, breaking a law for a law.

Not only that, the guy is a f*cking douche, what right int he world does he have to attack a website and everything linked to it, it's crazy.

I gues I didn't really add anything to this conversation,a nd I had more to say, but it's 2:30am and I can barely think about anything in a coherent manner.

umm dont get me wrong i think you have me mixed up. i dont hate [db] or SS. its the DoS attackers i hate. i want to know why anime supreme is involed in the attacks. It seems they want to attack anyone with an ftp site that takes donations or charges. That is one thing all these attacks have in common. Which makes me belive it might be a person or persons employed with an anime company.

If an anime company was going to put its time and money into something like this I think they'd have the resources to make it a little more effective. Or they'd just sic their lawyers on us.

Many fansubbers hate when people sell their work for profit (usually on ebay). So this may be an extension of that combined with vigilantism. If they think these FTP sites are making money rather than just paying bandwidth bills, then I can see how they might not be amused. However, it's not reasonable to just start attacking websites and make up BS to justify it.

my recommendation for DDoS attacks? put up something like mod_dosevasive if you're running apache, Dow. It sends back a 403/404 to an individual IP if there are too many requests, like 10/second.

i dont think that would stop the CPU useage. i still dont understand why dow's firewall doesnt block DDoS attempts. There should be a seprate "Hardware" Firewall installed. and not a "Software" one

There are hardware DoS prevention routers, but it's up to the upstream provider to put them in. If Dow is only hosting, then the only solution would be to use software anti-DoS software.
